The solution combines Siemens’ private 5G infrastructure with Palo Alto Networks’ Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW), which has been specifically optimized for artificial intelligence. Siemens has extensively tested the solution to ensure high availability, network resilience, and uninterrupted operation. It is designed to enable manufacturers to meet diverse industrial security requirements while maintaining the critical performance demanded by their increasingly AI-driven production processes.

Solution addresses industry-specific requirements

“A pharmaceutical production facility has different security requirements than an automotive assembly line,” says Michael Metzler, Vice President of Horizontal Management Cybersecurity for Digital Industries at Siemens. “The verified solution from Siemens and Palo Alto Networks addresses these industry-specific requirements through a specially developed architecture. This provides manufacturers with secure 5G connectivity tailored to their operations—without compromising on performance."

“We are building the central nervous system for the future of industry”

“Palo Alto Networks and Siemens aren’t just connecting the factory floor—we are building the central nervous system for the future of industry. A future that is intelligent, autonomous, and secure from the ground up," says Dharminder Debisarun, Smart Industries Cybersecurity Executive at Palo Alto Networks.

Verified solution delivers industrial-grade security

Data-driven production systems require wireless connectivity for countless sensors and mobile assets. This makes private 5G an indispensable infrastructure. At the same time, cyberattacks can cause costly downtime or endanger employee safety. Additionally, regulations such as NIS2 require defense-in-depth security architectures that comply with industry standards such as IEC 62443. Standard IT security solutions can cause performance bottlenecks or fail to adequately address OT-specific threats in industrial environments.

Extensive testing across multiple deployment scenarios

The collaboration between Siemens and Palo Alto Networks addresses this gap. Palo Alto Networks has specifically optimized its NGFW technology for Siemens’ private 5G infrastructure. Siemens has verified the solution through extensive testing across multiple deployment scenarios. This verification process confirms that the solution delivers industrial-grade security without compromising the low latency and high throughput required by real-time production systems—a crucial difference from generic IT security approaches.

Three security elements

Siemens has tested and verified the solution specifically for industrial environments at its Digital Connectivity Lab in Erlangen. The solution combines three elements for advanced cybersecurity:

  • Siemens’ private 5G infrastructure provides local, deterministic wireless connectivity for mobile and moving assets with integrated security features that protect the core network infrastructure. The solution ensures data sovereignty and low-latency communication—independent of mobile network operators.
  • SINEC Security Monitor: Siemens software for passive, non-intrusive, continuous on-premises security monitoring during production. The system identifies communication anomalies, unauthorized devices, or potential threats without disrupting production operations.
  • Palo Alto Networks Firewall delivers Layer 7 security and dedicated OT protocol analysis optimized specifically for industrial environments. Unlike standard IT security solutions, it offers deep packet inspection for OT protocols while maintaining the low latency required by real-time control applications—now also available for wireless communication over private 5G networks. This includes protection against malware, intrusion attempts, and data exfiltration without the performance degradation typical of off-the-shelf security tools
  • This verified architecture meets the IEC 62443 requirements for the security of industrial automation and control systems while maintaining the performance characteristics essential for time-critical production applications. The solution is now available as part of the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio.
