Smart sensors send timely warning about bridge damage
Düsseldorf Airport monitors a critical bridge thanks to numerous sensors. The data is exchanged via the Internet of Things.

Düsseldorf Airport's fuel depot can only be accessed via a single bridge. More than 120 tankers carrying about 30,000 liters of kerosene each pass over the bridge every day, resulting in material fatigue and damage over time.
Together with Telekom and its partner BS2 Sicherheitssysteme, the airport is thus developing a digital sensor-based monitoring solution . 50 units have been integrated into the road surface and the bridge caps so far. They measure temperature, humidity and corrosion and warn about critical conditions or irreparable damage to the concrete structure. The relevant data is exchanged via Telekom's machine and sensor network (narrowband IoT). This is an improvement over the previous form of monitoring that consisted of taking material samples - a considerably more complex and destructive method. Further road structures at Düsseldorf airport will gradually be equipped with the appropriate sensor technology.
