Smartphones & co. also useful in production
Smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches are widely used in daily life – in production, on the other hand, they are hardly ever used at all. And wrongly so, as the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT has found.

According to the findings of the SmarDe’s@Work project, designed specifically with practical relevance in mind, smartphones & co. are also useful in digitalized production. However, use of these devices has as yet failed to catch on, primarily due to data security concerns and the lack of instructions for their successful integration.
The researchers at FIT implemented a total of eight use cases and have made the complete study available as a free download. The high-potential areas of application assessed include improved machine setup through cross-layer information transfer and a warning function in the event of a machine stoppage. A planned demonstration in Bayreuth is intended to promote the use of smartphones & co. in production under practical conditions to companies. The project is funded by the Bavarian Research Foundation (BFS).
