Nowadays, more than ever before, machines and plants are kitted out with state-of-the-art sensors that provide users with masses of data. Analyzing this information enables them, for instance, to spot any discrepancies between planning and actual production, thus helping to optimize processes. In most cases, however, storage and analysis are still decentralized and subject to a time delay. The Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT has now teamed up with a number of international partners with the aim of networking different areas of production wirelessly via 5G to derive the potential for industrial manufacturing.

The "5G-SMART: 5G for smart manufacturing" project, which is funded by the European Union for two-and-a-half years, sees the consortium setting up 5G networks in situ to demonstrate, validate and evaluate the potential of 5G in real manufacturing environments. The participants are working on advanced 5G-integrated production systems such as remote-controlled industrial robotics, wireless production process monitoring and mobile robotics. The three European trial sites are an Ericsson factory in Sweden, the Fraunhofer IPT shopfloor in Aachen and a Bosch semiconductor factory in Reutlingen (both in Germany).
