Although this is sometimes contested by critics, discoveries made for racecars do – sometimes directly, sometimes with a bit of a detour – lead to improvements for standard automobiles. Why not do the same for the move towards electromobility as a form of mass transportation, is what students at Kaiserslautern University and University of Applied Sciences likely thought when starting their own team to compete in the Formula Student motorsport competition. Since then, every year a vehicle built exclusively by the students of the two universities has been presented and entered in the race. Kaiserslautern University is presenting the latest model, “Electronyte E13,” at HANNOVER MESSE 2014.

The E13’s drive has two liquid-cooled synchronous motors with total output of 57.8 kW and 73.7 Nm torque. With the help of the self-developed traction control system (TCS), the vehicle accelerates to 100 km/h in just four seconds, and its top speed of 120 km/h just a moment later. Its energy is supplied by 268 lithium-polymer cells with a total capacity of 6.9 kWh. These are monitored by a specially developed battery management system (BMS). The BMS data and other telemetry data is acquired by multiple sensors on the vehicle and can be wirelessly processed in real time by computer. Thanks to its improved carbon fiber monocoque with partial foam core reinforcement, the weight of the E13 could also be significantly reduced compared with its predecessors.
