The plant is being built and operated by Hydrospider AG, which is owned in equal shares by Swiss electricity producer and energy service provider Alpiq and hydrogen expert H2 Energy . It is to be built by Alpiq on the left bank of the Aare Canal, near the Gösgen hydropower plant (Solothurn). One of the five Swiss nuclear power stations, in which Alpiq also holds a stake, is just two kilometers away.

According to the parties involved, this is the first Swiss hydrogen production plant on a commercial scale. Commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2019. The 2-MW plant will produce the hydrogen for the first 50 of a total of 1,600 fuel cell electric trucks that will roll on Swiss roads by 2025. These commercial vehicles are manufactured by Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility, a joint venture between Hyundai Motors and H2 Energy.
