The decision was made in April: the Bavarian Research Foundation will support the research project "5G Today", which also involves the antenna manufacturer Kathrein and the metrology specialists from Rohde & Schwarz . The project is being developed and directed by the Institute for Broadcasting Technology (IRT), and the project partners are supported by the following associated partners: Bayerischer Rundfunk , which intends to operate the 5G broadcasting mode FeMBMS (Further Evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service) at its broadcasting sites, and the network operator Telefónica Germany with its 700 MHz band frequencies, which are ideal for large transmission ranges.

The whole thing is being tested at Bayerischer Rundfunk's Wendelstein radio station, where a test field is currently being developed for broadcasting with over 5G in the 700 MHz frequency range. Project participants there are conducting research into how the technology can be used in the future for the large-scale and economical transmission of broadcasting content. The first test broadcast is planned for the end of 2018.
