Pepperl+Fuchs, one of the leading specialists for factory and process automation with headquarters in Mannheim, Germany, is expanding its portfolio of isolating barriers of the globally popular K-System for DIN rail mounting with the KCD2-SCS* interface module. As the first 2-channel intrinsically safe AI/AO isolating barrier with dual function, the module is intended for use wherever analogue input and analogue output control loops are required. With a compact 12.5 millimetre housing and a packing density of six millimetres per channel, the new module enables space-saving integration in the control cabinet. The modules are HART-compatible and can be used both as SMART transmitter power supplies for 2-wire transmitters and as SMART output drivers for positioners. On the control side, the module can be operated in both current sink and current source mode, with dip switches on the front of the module being used for switching. This considerably extends compatibility with a wide range of controllers.

Compact design, configurable channels

A completely new feature for modules of this type is that each channel can be configured, allowing positioner control (AO) on one channel and position monitoring (AI) on the second channel. Positioners ensure that the drive is brought into a position specified by the control system. They are usually equipped with analogue position indicators whose feedback confirms that the position specification has been met. These can be stroke or rotation angles, for example, which are typically provided as 4-20 milliamp signals and reported back to the control system. Previously, a separate isolator module was required for the input and output signals. With the new module now available, these two functions can be utilised in one device for the first time. If the modules are no longer required for their original purpose when changes are made to the system, they can be reused elsewhere in the system thanks to their configurability. This optimises storage and ensures investment security.

Can also be used in critical environments

The KCD2-SCS* is an intrinsically safe barrier with ATEX, IECEx and UL approvals that can be used for applications in potentially explosive atmospheres. A version for signalling in non-hazardous areas is also available. Screw terminals or spring terminals with push-in connection technology are available for each version. In addition, the modules are certified up to SIL 2 (SC 3) in accordance with IEC/EN 61508 and are therefore suitable for safety applications up to SIL 2 and even up to SIL 3 when used redundantly. Common applications for the KCD2-SCS* modules in the process industry include process control applications that have both analogue input and analogue output control loops, safety systems (SIS and ESD) that require intrinsic safety barriers in accordance with SIL 2 or SIL 3, and control loops in hazardous areas.
