With the UB*-F42 series, Pepperl+Fuchs, a specialist in electronic components and sensors for factory and process automation, is adding an all-rounder to its broad ultrasonic sensor portfolio that is suitable for a wide variety of applications: It can detect objects, track material consumption, measure a fill level, or monitor a passage. It can be integrated into the IIoT via its IO-Link interface. In addition to the actual measured values, the device transmits extensive process and status data for optimized control and predictive maintenance.

Proven concept with new features

The device concept of the UB*-F42 series has proven itself over many years in the predecessor product of the same name, as well as in the conceptually identical K0 series. The new sensor generation, however, has been further improved in key areas; it offers additional device variants as well as a wider variety of functions and configuration options. These include an adjustable beam diameter, a particularly small blind zone, IP67 protection for a high degree of resistance to dust and moisture, and automatic sensor synchronization.

Comprehensive diagnostic data on device status

The optional IO-Link interface not only simplifies commissioning and parameterization but also enables direct access to all sensor parameters. In addition to process values, these include comprehensive diagnostic data on device status, such as operating hours and temperature readings. This allows for proactive maintenance planning tailored to specific needs.

Options for tight installation spaces and parallel operation

Two versions of the UB*-F42 series with different ranges are also available in the so-called sidelooker version. Here, the ultrasonic transducer is rotated 90 degrees within the housing, allowing the sensor to be easily installed even in confined spaces. The particularly small blind zone further reduces the space required for the measurement application. Additionally, the diameter of the sound beam can be adapted to the application without loss of range. A large diameter allows for the detection of large areas where target objects can appear at any location. A narrow beam avoids disruptive echo effects, for example, to optimize measurement in a confined silo.

Parallel use of up to ten sensors

When using multiple sensors in close proximity to one another, sound waves may overlap, interfering with detection. To prevent this, the UB*-F42 series features three different synchronization modes: in-phase, multiplex, and externally triggered. These modes allow the parallel use of the devices to be adapted to different types of applications. Up to ten sensors can be connected via the synchronization input; synchronization occurs automatically and without additional configuration.

Wide Range of Applications

The robust measurement principle of ultrasonic sensor technology and the flexible device concept of the UB*-F42 series allow for use in numerous applications. The spectrum of applications ranges from level detection to intralogistics and machine production.

Since the same device type is suitable for a wide range of tasks, the inventory of replacement devices can be reduced to a minimum.
