No matter how many people would like to switch to electromobility to get around – as long as charging times and driving ranges do not significantly improve, development of a mass market seems unlikely. However, fuel cells may be able to achieve fairly soon what still seems impossible for conventional batteries: zero-emission electromobility with large ranges and short charging times. Auto-Stack CORE – a collaboration by nine European car makers, system integrators and suppliers together with five research institutes – therefore wants to develop a new generation of fuel cells suitable for vehicles. The project is coordinated by the Baden-Württemberg Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research (ZSW), which is presenting it starting on 7 April at HANNOVER MESSE 2014.

The European joint project will develop fuel cells for vehicles that meet the usual requirements for performance, lifespan and safety. The program therefore includes a comprehensive testing program and ongoing cost analysis. A further goal is to build the industrial core of a fuel cell industry in Europe. Pooling European expertise also creates excellent conditions for standing up to the challenges of global competition in the future fuel cell market.
