Vienna launches 5G challenge for startups and industry
The introduction of 5G is imminent. To make what is still for many a theoretical concept more tangible, the City of Vienna has launched a challenge for startups and industrial companies, with €400,000 up for grabs for new 5G projects.

The city is looking for companies that offer 5G-ready solutions, to expand Vienna’s digital offering for its residents and local businesses. The ‘ 5G Vienna Use Case Challenge ’ aims to find concrete uses for the new mobile standard. The telecommunications providers A1, Drei, and Magenta Telekom – the three companies that hold 5G licenses for Vienna – will help implement the winning projects later this year. The competition is open until September 15, with the focus on solutions for mobility, public spaces, healthcare, and education.
However, many industrial companies currently have their hands full building their own 5G networks, known as ‘campus networks’. As German business newspaper ‘ Handelsblatt’ reports , numerous pilot projects are already underway. German carmakers in particular would rather be independent than rely on network operators.
