The digital transformation is causing far-reaching economic and social changes. The convergence of the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and blockchain enables new business models in the form of innovative services and products. Machines are becoming more and more intelligent and autonomous. In companies, however, there is great uncertainty about the consequences of independently acting machines. Because in order to benefit from the machine economy, companies need new structures, processes, knowledge and skills.

The Fraunhofer Institute white paper «The Advance of the Machines – Vision and Implications of a Machine Economy» examines the potential of a machine economy. In addition to the basics of the machine economy, the study points out several fields of action that companies should address in the context of the machine economy.
