How data glasses are revolutionizing firefighting
Zwickau University of Applied Sciences is at HANNOVER MESSE 2019 to unveil an innovative mask that enables firefighters to find their way around burning and smoke-filled rooms. The system combines a respiratory mask with integrated data glasses and spatial localization electronics.
Firefighters in heavily smoke-filled buildings can easily become disoriented in what are usually unfamiliar surroundings. In the worst case, this can be fatal. That's why a standard procedure has now become firmly established in such situations, with firefighters searching for people in need of help in pairs. Unfortunately, firefighters often have to rely solely on their sense of touch and can lose contact with each other without realizing. The conditions of the situation then generally make it more difficult for them to find their partner again. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering at Zwickau University of Applied Sciences (WHZ) has been addressing this problem and is presenting the fruits of its efforts at HANNOVER MESSE 2019 - an innovative new firefighting mask.
The innovation centers on a pair of data glasses integrated into the mask. This enables firefighters to move around in poorly lit or smoke-filled buildings. It also provides them with important information in their field of vision, such as a layout plan, evacuation plan, instructions from the unit commander, and their own vital signs," says Professor Rigo Herold from WHZ. This autonomous "navigation and communication solution" uses three lightweight ultra-wideband (UWB) radio nodes that are incorporated into the firefighters' protective clothing. Innovative technology that combines distance and angle of arrival calculations can be used to analyze three essential individual signals to determine the relative positions of the firefighters in relation to each other. However, this application presented some very tough technical challenges. All the optical equipment, electronics and power supply needed to be integrated into the mask without impairing the wearer's field of vision. All the mask's components also had to be airtight. Other essential features include heat resistance and mechanical stability. To help meet these requirements, the researchers at WHZ were able to draw on the expertise they gained in previous research projects on data glasses for steel workers and printers.

Always good to go
...thanks to the green 'sharing points' located at ARAL filling stations in Berlin. Germany’s largest gas station operator is taking part in an experiment conducted by Berlin-based start-up GreenPack to trial a new eco-friendly energy infrastructure.
GreenPack mobile energy solutions GmbH is a Berlin-based start-up that has set out to establish a mobile, sustainable energy network to help drive forward the shift toward alternative forms of energy and mobility. As part of its dedicated efforts to develop, manufacture and distribute an intelligent standardized battery pack system, GreenPack is adopting a comprehensive Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) approach. The company hopes to help business and site partners benefit from numerous electric mobility applications - such as electric cargo bikes, e-scooters and electrical gardening machinery - more cost-efficiently and without running any risks. The start-up is appearing at HANNOVER MESSE 2019 to showcase a new pilot project in this field.
Aimed at trialing a green energy infrastructure for electric urban transportation, this experiment - the only one of its kind in Germany - is being supported by the gas station chain ARAL. At two Berlin branches of Germany's largest gas station operator, drivers of electric vehicles can now make a pit stop at green 'sharing points' to grab a fully charged battery. Given that it only takes a few seconds to switch batteries, customers no longer have to worry about long waits at a charging station. In particular, the project partners' commercial light electric vehicles benefit from zero downtime, which ensures they can be operated much more efficiently. Moreover, the collaboration between ARAL and BaaS-provider GreenPack proves that filling stations can maintain a key role in the evolving mobility mix. "As established building blocks of the mobility infrastructure, gas stations offer the ideal location for our '‘sharing points'," says Tobias Breyer, operational manager at GreenPack. "Conventional filling stations urgently need electric offerings. ARAL's two pilot sites are a good example of an energy hub of the future that can optimally serve tomorrow's mobility mix," Breyer sums up.

Taking charge of e-mobility!
Together with its development partners RINSPEED and KUKA, HARTING is at HANNOVER MESSE 2019 to showcase an automated charging solution for the e-mobility charging infrastructure based on DC combo 2 connectors.
The likelihood of a future e-mobility breakthrough depends heavily on how long it takes to charge vehicles and how user-friendly the charging infrastructure is. Until now, long charging times and bulky, heavy connectors have deterred car owners from going electric as much as high acquisition costs and limited ranges. For this reason, fast-charging DC technology (designed to charge vehicles sufficiently within minutes) is just as desirable as automatic charging solutions, as larger charging infrastructures are harder to handle and there is rarely enough space for charging in parking garages or fleet parking lots. As a leading pioneer in this field, HARTING is attending HANNOVER MESSE 2019 with its development partners RINSPEED and KUKA to showcase its visionary automatic charging solution for the e-mobility charging infrastructure.
The consortium has its sights set primarily on e-vehicles used in regional transportation and logistics. If companies are to keep up with the ever-increasing demands placed on delivery times and fleet availability, fast DC charging is surely a must. For instance, Frank M. Rinderknecht from RINSPEED envisions a future in which small, autonomous vehicles deliver goods to customers just in time and without detours - ideally, charging e-vans while they’re being loaded with packages and other materials. The automatic solution HARTING and its partners are bringing to Hannover is their e-charging assistant robot that plugs the DC combo 2 connector into the vehicle’s charging socket and removes it again, along with the cable, once the vehicle is fully charged. This fully automatic process has the vehicle ready to hit the road again in next to no time. What’s more, HARTING has optimized the powerful DC supply to suit the e-charging assistant’s specifications, supplying it with all the data, signals and power it requires.

Opening up opportunities
In the state-funded open source project BaSys 4.0, Fraunhofer IESE is one of 15 partners devising core concepts and standards for an Industry 4.0 platform. A demonstration model is now on show in Hannover to highlight the related benefits and potential applications.
Increasingly flexible manufacturing processes are helping companies respond faster to changing market requirements and, most importantly, remain strong competitors. This is where 'digital twins' play a key role in networking and digitizing production processes. The Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering (IESE) creates such digital twins using BaSys 4.0 middleware. Heading up a project of the same name, Fraunhofer IESE is now working with a consortium of project partners from industry and research on open source middleware that implements administration shells and digital twins. The aim is to allow production plants to be networked across different layers and manufacturers - from IT on the shop floor through to systems used in the office.
The digital twins created with BaSys 4.0 are designed to provide an exact overview of ongoing production operations at any time, with quality data being collected from different sources, processed and provided to clients for further analysis. Optional service-based manufacturing, meanwhile, enables companies to adapt their production processes with ease. At HANNOVER MESSE 2019, Fraunhofer IESE is using a model factory to showcase a range of solutions run on BaSyx (an open access platform hosted by the Eclipse Foundation) that emphasize the related benefits and potential applications.

Five partners – one pair of wires!
Weidmüller, Phoenix Contact, Reichle & De-Massari, Belden and Fluke Networks are appearing together at HANNOVER MESSE 2019 to showcase their technology partnership for Single Pair Ethernet (SPE).
Leading international trade fairs like HANNOVER MESSE have never just been a stage for "lone wolves" to prowl. In fact, they are increasingly becoming a high-profile platform for strategic partnerships that are driving technological progress. Just in time for HANNOVER MESSE 2019, five companies - Weidmüller, Phoenix Contact, Reichle & De-Massari, Belden and Fluke Networks - have decided to join forces and establish a technology partnership for single pair Ethernet (SPE). In an effort to deliver a coordinated infrastructure for devices, connectors, cables and measuring technology, the partners are jointly developing and supporting the standardized connector patterns introduced in IEC 63171 2 (office environment) and IEC 63171 5 (industrial environment). "Single pair Ethernet is one of the megatrends in industrial data transfer," explains Torsten Janwlecke, President Business Area Device Connectors at Phoenix Contact. According to the partners, SPE no longer specifies new cable and performance records, but instead forms the normative framework for application-appropriate streamlined cabling.
Data cables using just one pair of wires are set to support transfer distances of up to 1,000 meters and transfer rates ranging from 10 megabits per second to 1 gigabit per second. That would make SPE ideal for infrastructure applications in mechanical, plant and process engineering as well as infrastructure in buildings. The main advantage to SPE is that it's environment-neutral, meaning field devices, sensors and actuators can easily be incorporated into an existing Ethernet environment at company level. This eliminates the need for additional gateways and interfaces. "Unlike fieldbus protocols, Ethernet runs through all automation levels. It is more consistent, efficient and cheaper than fieldbus systems," Janwlecke adds.

Connect to the cloud for clarity!
The STAUFF Group's exhibits at HANNOVER MESSE 2019 include a new assembly head for processing pipework with very low bending radii and an innovative cloud connection designed to simplify the management of parameter sets.
For more than 50 years, the companies of the STAUFF Group have been developing, manufacturing and distributing pipework equipment and hydraulic components for mechanical and plant engineering and for servicing and industrial maintenance. Among the highlights of recent years is undoubtedly the SPR-PRC-POC cutting ring assembly machine, which was launched in 2015. This compact, versatile table-top device with combined pressure and position control is used for the preassembly and final assembly of cutting rings. However, STAUFF has now made this highly successful model even more versatile, and it's showcasing the result at HANNOVER MESSE 2019 - featuring a new assembly head for processing tubes with very low bending radii.
So what makes the new version so special? The fixture for the cutting ring assembly stud has been moved further up than on the previous standard model, reducing the gap between the tube axis in the assembly stud and the top edge of the machine from 77 to 31 millimeters. As a result, the cutting rings can now easily be fitted to tubes with low axis spacings. When it comes to processing tubes with complex geometries, such as short tube ends and 90-degree deflections, the safety light barrier that protects the assembly area can be deactivated, if necessary. The new assembly head is ideal for tubes with diameters of between 6 and 18 millimeters in the lightweight series and between 6 and 16 millimeters in the heavy-duty series. All users need to do to continue using a pre-existing assembly tool is load new parameter sets into the machine. To simplify this process, STAUFF has also developed a cloud connection for the relevant machine type, which it is also unveiling in Hannover.
