Logistics? These folks have it all in hand!ProGlove is a startup specializing in industrial wearables, and it’s using the global reach of HANNOVER MESSE 2019 to showcase its latest hands-free scanners. These intelligent barcode scanners are already proving their worth in numerous industrial companies.

The intelligent barcode scanners from this Munich startup are set to boost efficiency practically anywhere where staff - up till now – have had to use conventional scanner guns. Thanks to smart ProGlove technology, users should be able to save up to four seconds on every scan. That makes a big difference in industrial environments, where workers have to repeatedly reach (or search) for scanners to acknowledge jobs, document steps or dispatch packages, and scan several thousand codes a day. As its name suggests, ProGlove is worn on a glove or cuff and can be actuated with the greatest of ease. According to the developers, ProGlove’s wearables are the smallest and lightest scanners in the world and can help reduce the amount of weight an employee has to lift during each shift by up to 1.5 metric tons. What’s more, up to 33 percent of common errors can be avoided, thanks to functions such as worker feedback.

ProGlove is part of a showcase being staged at HANNOVER MESSE 2019 by Capgemini that is training the spotlight on the improvements smart gloves can help deliver in the logistics chain of a production facility. ProGlove is exhibiting two solutions - the MARK One S intelligent wearable scanner for standard-range applications and its younger brother, the MARK 2, for mid-range applications. Reportedly, more than 300 customers are currently using industrial wearables from ProGlove, including big names such as KUKA, Bosch, Festo and thyssenkrupp. Andreas König, CEO of ProGlove, offers his own view on what the future holds for industrial wearables: "Public debate is currently centered on artificial intelligence and robotics, and we feel too much attention is being focused on machines, deep learning and sensors. Unfortunately, in many cases people are being forgotten. However, we don't think it’s realistic to expect that fully automated factories will be up and running in the foreseeable future. That's why we are using our technology to reinforce the role played by people. In fact, we are certain that industrial wearables are going to be the next ‘big thing’, and we think Germany and Central Europe should - and will - take on a leading role in developing that technology."

Bluhm Systeme is focusing on its strengths at HANNOVER MESSE 2019: "Integrated Industry - next steps". The company's "Bluhmware" software aims to take machine learning to a whole new level with fully autonomous production processes.

Bluhm Systeme is a full-service provider for cross-industry production and logistics labeling solutions. Its products put information such as expiration dates, lot and batch IDs, and logistics information directly or indirectly onto products and packaging via labels. Besides label printers and dispensers and specialist labeling systems, the company’s range also includes inkjet printers, laser labeling solutions and thermal transfer direct printers. What's more, it also manufactures labels for all applications. This extensive portfolio is rounded off with accessories such as inks, software and ink ribbons, not to mention various financing options, product training, a large service network and a 24-hour hotline.

Through its exhibits at HANNOVER MESSE 2019, Bluhm aims to show that, as an expert in labeling technology, it can provide more than just the essential printing and labeling machines and accessories. It also offers software applications that play a key part in implementing autonomous processes for the all-important tasks of collecting and analyzing data. The main advantage is that labeling technology is usually to be found at the really critical points in production, which means "Bluhmware" software is ideally placed to capture, collate and subsequently evaluate relevant production KPIs. The software uses signal exchanges with conveyor technology to determine data such as production time, production speed, plant output and downtimes. Based on this information, the software then calculates the optimum plant speeds and ideal production sequences. All in all, it helps machines to learn - in the true spirit of "integrated industry".

Taking sensitivity to a whole new level!
It's a ground-breaking measurement solution that certainly doesn’t break the ground - but it does break records. Physicists from Saarland University are at HANNOVER MESSE 2019 to show how very weak magnetic signals can be measured.

Whether it's the non-contact measurement of heart activity and brainwaves or detecting ore deposits and archaeological remains buried deep underground, the solution that physicists from Saarland University are bringing to Hannover should help. The scientists have developed magnetic field sensors that are breaking sensitivity records and opening up a whole range of potential new applications. Professor Uwe Hartmann and his research team have developed a system that allows them to detect weak magnetic signals over large distances in normal environments - that is, without needing a vacuum, low temperatures or shielding. Even when there are numerous sources of interference, their system can detect signal strengths far below a billionth of a tesla - about a million times smaller than the Earth’s magnetic field. This means it can be used to detect biomagnetic signals in the human body and geophysical phenomena alike.

The research team is at HANNOVER MESSE 2019 in search of partners who can help develop the new measuring methods further. Experimental physicist Professor Hartmann has a nifty example to illustrate how impressive the team’s achievement is: "You could say the precision of our technique is like being able to locate a grain of sand in a mountain range. We can detect over relatively large distances magnetic fields that are approximately a million times weaker than the Earth’s magnetic field - just a few picotesla, that is a millionth of a millionth of a tesla." To date, sensors working under normal ambient conditions have been able to detect magnetic fields that are about a thousand times smaller than the Earth’s magnetic field.

Hartmann and his team have been involved in several projects that have focused on filtering out interference signals from measurement data. For instance, the researchers developed a smart sensor cable in which the magnetometers are connected to one another in a network. A number of these systems are currently being trialed as components in airport traffic management systems, for instance. Although the highly sensitive magnetic field sensors on show in Hannover are still, in essence, basic research, there are a wide range of potential applications. They could, for example, be used for diagnostic purposes in cardiology or neurology, where they could complement existing techniques such as ECG (electrocardiography) or EEG (electroencephalography). Another potential use is in geophysical sensing when searching for crude oil, mineral deposits or archaeological remains.

Not just any new smartphone...

TWINSOFT is a software company that pursues a pretty impressive principle: If a person is excited about something, he accomplishes more of everything - even the impossible. Visitors to HANNOVER MESSE 2019 can decide for themselves whether the company has indeed succeeded in accomplishing the impossible. TWINSOFT is at the fair to exhibit its mobile, intelligent and versatile biometrics suite, known as "BioShare", and explain how it is set to make biometrics the ultimate solution.

"BioShare" is designed as a cost-effective solution for managing biometric features such as palm veins, faces, voices and fingerprints as a digital identity. (CroCo)dial up the current for loss-free energy transport!
The new HTS CrossConductor promises to be a versatile superconducting cable for loss-free energy transport that is simple to manufacture on an industrial footing. Scientists from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) are at the leading "Integrated Energy" trade fair, part of HANNOVER MESSE 2019, to explain all.

The potential applications for the new superconducting cable developed by KIT range from connecting wind parks and DC power supply on ships to high-current cabling in future electric aircraft. The new HTS CrossConductor - HTS CroCo, for short - is based on rare-earth barium copper-oxide (REBCO), a high-temperature superconductor that was discovered in 1987. Unlike other superconductors, which typically only start working at temperatures close to minus 269 degrees Celsius, REBCO can be used at temperatures starting from minus 196 degrees Celsius. However, long lengths of the superconductor can only be manufactured in the form of thin tapes.

During HANNOVER MESSE 2019, the physicists from KIT are presenting a method they have developed as a simple means of manufacturing high-current cables from these REBCO tapes. The star exhibit - the HTS CroCo - is made up of REBCO tapes in two different widths with a cross-shaped cross section. HTS CroCos can transmit very high DC currents but are still more compact and lightweight than conventional copper or aluminum cables. When cooled with liquid hydrogen, they can even transport chemical and electrical energy in parallel. However, according to the scientists at KIT, the biggest advantage is loss-free energy transport, which means the superconductor can be used in the development of environmentally friendly and energy-saving solutions.

WEASEL - Sally - SLAM! All for autonomous efficiency!
Our headline might sound like a storyline for a cartoon, but it encapsulates the AGV technology the SSI Schäfer Group is bringing to HANNOVER MESSE 2019. On show at its stand is a wide range of manual, semi- and fully automated production logistics solutions, with a special focus on automated guided vehicles (AGVs).

"Sally" completes a range of transport tasks with great flexibility and navigates autonomously using simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) technology.

Pulling together in the name of research and science!
Kiel University (CAU) is exhibiting no fewer than 17 inter- and transdisciplinary research projects and staging almost 40 presentations to provide an insight into the latest research.

CAU aims to find important answers to the most challenging questions of our time through its latest research projects on topics such as battery optimization, autonomous ship navigation and radar-based pollutant measurement procedures. The university is also looking to highlight the social relevance of this research in two panel discussions. On Monday April 1, the Minister of Education, Science and Cultural Affairs in Schleswig-Holstein, Karin Prien, is speaking about "Artificial intelligence in research" and on Wednesday April 3, Minister for Economic Affairs, Traffic, Employment, Technology and Tourism in Schleswig-Holstein, Dr. Bernd Buchholz, is leading a discussion on "Leap innovation and the digital economy".

The official highlight of the university's involvement in the fair is to be the Schleswig-Holstein Day on Wednesday, which culminates in a parliamentary evening. The week closes on Friday April 5 with the Kieler Forschungswerkstatt (Kiel Research Workshop), a joint organization of the CAU and the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN). Hands-on activities and experiments will be presented on the topics of "Nanotechnology in everyday life" and "Plastic in rivers and oceans".

The main theme the university is bringing to this year’s fair is "Kiel University Interfaces". "This is also the title of the proposal, with which we are currently applying to become a University of Excellence. Our focus here is on interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary interaction and cooperation between disciplinary cultures, subjects and institutions. In Hannover, we want to show how we are already bringing this idea to life in Schleswig-Holstein," CAU President Lutz Kipp explains. Accordingly, the CAU's partners this year are the state Ministry of Education, Science and Cultural Affairs and the state Ministry of Economic Affairs, Transport, Employment, Technology and Tourism, the Business Development and Technology Transfer Corporation of Schleswig-Holstein GmbH (WTSH) as well as the Fraunhofer Institutes from Itzehoe and Lübeck.

The electronics and sensors specialists from Pepperl+Fuchs are once again bringing a wide range of exhibits to HANNOVER MESSE 2019. Among other things, the company aims to set new standards in handling, ease-of-use and security for the process industry - with its new PROFINET gateway.

Pepperl+Fuchs specializes in electronic components and sensors for factory and process automation, including components for chemical plants and offshore platforms, as well as parts for the automotive industry and mechanical and plant engineering. With a portfolio like that, it's not surprising the company is a regular at HANNOVER MESSE - and it is back in 2019 with an enormous selection of exhibits that are set to wow international visitors. Included among them is the new PROFINET gateway, which is poised to set new standards in terms of handling, user friendliness and security.

The new Zone 2, Class I/Div. 2 certified remote I/O PROFINET gateway from Pepperl+Fuchs has been designed to open the door for Industry 4.0 applications in the process industry. Connected to the master system via two signal line pairs, it can handle huge volumes of data and is ready-made for applications that aggregate and analyze big data. In doing so, the Ethernet-based gateway reaches data transfer rates of up to 100 Mbit/s via PROFINET. The PROFINET gateway supports HART and/or HART IP to transmit process variables and additional status information from field devices. At the same time, HART IP can be used to effectively manage assets. What's more, with its two Ethernet interfaces and integrated MRP (media redundancy protocol) switch, the new PROFINET gateway is ideally suited for setting up high-availability ring networks. Two heads are better than one
HEITEC AG is at HANNOVER MESSE 2019 to demonstrate how the process of commissioning new machines can be made much quicker and more efficient with the help of HeiVM and a corresponding digital twin.

It's becoming increasing clear that many of the exhibitors at HANNOVER MESSE 2019 would have fit right in at CEBIT, too - HEITEC AG is a perfect example of this. Under the umbrella term HEITEC 4.0, the company recently developed a portfolio of solutions that covers everything from digital plant and process planning, and virtual commissioning to monitoring for plant and production processes. ALTHEN specializes in the electrical measurement of physical parameters. The INNOBOOT network is making waves at HANNOVER MESSE 2019, inviting landlubbers to completely rethink houseboats.

As a regional network of innovative mid-size companies, INNOBOOT set itself the goal of developing and marketing cutting-edge houseboats, paying particular attention to their suitability for shallow waters. The INNOBOOT network – co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund as part of the Cross Innovation Initiative in Saxony-Anhalt - currently consists of five mid-size companies, all with different skill sets. Magdeburger Haus & Boot Manufaktur GbR is responsible for boat and houseboat construction, while Bernburg-based Funda BodeTramp takes care of boat rentals and events. Also based in Bernburg, Holz individuell GmbH is in charge of interior design and wooden furniture, while Magdeburg-based faktor m covers design and engineering and the Magdeburg Institute for Technology and Innovation GmbH takes care of marketing and software.

Always on the lookout for new companies to work with, the network is in Hannover to get potential partners excited about shaping the houseboats of the future. The outlook is very promising. After all, a current vacation trend that looks set to stay are active, independent and environmentally friendly holidays, where people can get close to nature as they sail down inland waterways on a houseboat. The challenge is that the industry needs to adapt to changing interests in society and the higher standards expected by customers as a result - demanding customers want new and appealing products. That's why the partners of the INNOBOOT network aim to jointly develop approaches, principles and concepts so they can offer houseboats in the future that meet the requirements of prospective customers. Besides developing solutions suitable for shallow waters, the main focus here is on meeting customer requirements in terms of aesthetics, safety, functionality and the quality of technology and equipment.
