The institutes of the Fraunhofer Group for Materials and Components develop sustainable innovations for mobility, mechanical and plant engineering, environmental and energy technology, construction, health and safety. Ours scientists’ materials expertise spans the entire industrial value chain, from fundamental research to materials-based system solutions.
The Group covers metallic, inorganic non-metallic, polymeric and renewable raw material-based materials. Hybrid materials and composites are especially important, for instance in lightweight construction. Particular focus is placed on resource efficiency and circularity.
Experimental work in laboratories, technical centers and pilot plants is complemented by numerical simulation and modeling. Digital representations of materials across their life cycle and all scales, from molecules to complex systems, are a high priority. Artificial intelligence methods are used more and more frequently.
