The Materials Testing Institute (MPA), founded in 1884 by Carl von Bach, is the largest central institute of the University of Stuttgart and the largest university-based institution of its kind worldwide. Many research activities and services are carried out on an interdisciplinary basis, involving related fields and disciplines. With more than 300 employees—around 150 of them scientists—the MPA conducts research projects focused on the characterization and qualification of new materials and manufacturing processes.
Within the division “Joining Processes” , welding processes are considered as a triad comprising process technology, material condition, and the resulting strength properties. Accordingly, experimental investigations and numerical process simulations are used to study the influence of process parameters on the resulting microstructure, the geometric formation of the joint, and ultimately the mechanical properties.
