The AAS4WH (“Asset Administration shell for the wiring harness”) project was funded as part of the German government's 35c economic stimulus package and ran from December 2021 to June 2025. The aim is the prototypical implementation of the administration shell in the development, production and assembly of the wiring harness, one of the most complex and expensive components in automotive engineering. Wire harnesses are responsible for power and signal distribution in the vehicle. Their complexity is increasing due to the growing number of sensors and variety of variants, while largely manual production in low-wage countries jeopardizes delivery reliability and supply chain resilience. Digital transformation offers great potential for meeting these challenges. The asset administration shell digitally maps the wire harness and enables end-to-end digitalization along the entire value chain. It improves transparency, traceability and efficiency by recording, storing and exchanging product and process data in a standardized way.
