OD OBN (On-Demand Ocean Bottom Node) is an autonomous underwater seismic system developed by SENAI CiMATEC in partnership with Shell, Petrobras, Sonardyne, and EMBRAPII. It enables on-demand seismic acquisition in deep water without vessel support, communicating and delivering data via AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) missions.
The system provides: active and passive seismic recording; detection of anomalous seafloor deformations; 5-year battery life; seismic data recording capability for 500 days; and installation at depths up to 3,000 meters. AUV missions allow: checking node health, collecting active and passive seismic data, gathering geodetic data, identifying subsidence alarms, calibrating geodetic signals, and delivering data to end-users.
Launched in 2018, OD OBN is a global pioneer in autonomous deepwater seismics. Over 2,000 days of functional deep-water tests have been completed across campaigns at Sapinhoá, Itapu, BC-10, Búzios 1/2/3, and Mero-4 (ongoing deployment since February 2026). A pilot production batch of 84 units is currently deployed.
