Among industrial fieldbuses, PROFIBUS is the world's most successful system, with well over 60 million fieldbus nodes installed. More than 13 million of these have been incorporated into process engineering systems. With its application profiles, such as PA Devices, PROFIdrive or PROFIsafe, PROFIBUS created application-specific solutions at an early stage, which were then also adapted to PROFINET. The integration of information technology into automation opens up significantly improved communication options between automation systems, extensive configuration and diagnostic options, and network-wide service and asset management functions. From the very beginning, these functions were fixed components of the PROFINET Ethernet communication system, which is standardized in the IEC and covers all automation technology requirements. Whether manufacturing or process automation, drive applications with or without functional safety, PROFINET is the first choice and standard everywhere in the automotive industry, widely used in mechanical engineering, well proven in the food and packaging industry or in logistics. The "PA device profile" for transmitters, actuators, analyzers and many more, has facilitated the handling of field devices for many years. The continuous further development of PROFINET offers users a long-term perspective for the realization of their automation tasks. Current topics include the future of PROFINET via TSN (Time-Sensitive Networking), new applications with SPE (Single Pair Ethernet), the interaction of PROFINET and OPC UA, or the new Physical Layer Ethernet-APL (Advanced Physical Layer), which now also opens up the intrinsically safe area in the process industry.
