The Thuringian Innovation Center for Recyclables (ThIWert) brings together the expertise of the University of Applied Sciences Nordhausen, the Weimar Institute of Applied Construction Research – a non-profit organisation (IAB) and the Bauhaus-Institute for Infrastructure Solutions (b.is) at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Together, they are driving the development of the circular economy. With a state-of-the-art technical center, ThIWert focuses on practical research to make resource utilization more efficient and sustainable.
In collaboration with partners from industry, commerce, public authorities and academia, solutions for waste management challenges and innovative recycling concepts are being developed. Modern technologies are opening up new opportunities for resource recovery. The new project phase "ThIWert 2.0" expands the research field beyond traditional recycling and integrates the R4 approach (Rethink, Reuse, Remanufacture, Recycling) to optimize material utilization along the entire process chain. A key focus is the digitalization of processes, particularly in terms of energy consumption, efficiency, and economic viability.
Current efforts are centered on the recycling of strategic secondary raw materials, the utilization of biological residues, and the field of sustainable construction and geotechnics.
Funded by the Free State of Thuringia and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), ThIWert supports the transition to a resource-efficient industry.
