The University's research capabilities on connected and autonomous vehicles are consolidated around a Living Lab, which serves as a pioneering hub focused on the future of mobility. This initiative aims to transform the automotive landscape by advancing connected, autonomous, and electrified vehicle technologies. As cities increasingly confront the challenges of congestion, emissions, and sustainability, the Lab plays a critical role in developing innovative solutions that prioritize smart, safe, and secure mobility.
The Living Lab team consists of 10 different research groups, labs and facilities, including Fraunhofer Innovation Platform for Composites Research and Surface Science Western, with more than 50 PhD, masters, and undergraduate students, and post-doc fellows.
With extensive partnerships across academia and industry, including key automotive OEMs and telecommunication infrastructure companies, the Lab focuses on collaborative research and real-world testing. It features advanced demonstration environments leveraging open-source software-defined platforms that integrate secure communication, sensing, control and navigation technologies. The end-to-end virtual-physical demonstration platform enables researchers and the industry to test their innovations under diverse urban scenarios.
