On the BASF site in Schwarzheide in Brandenburg, a new production plant for battery materials is being built. It is due to be completed in 2022. From then the factory should be able to deliver the battery materials to fit out around 400,000 fully electric vehicles a year. Thanks to the modular design of the factory, a rapid increase in production is also possible if necessary.
The plant in the Lausitz region is part of a multi-stage investment plan of BASF to create a European value creation chain. It also includes a plant in Harjavalta in Finland, which will make the pre-products for the factory in Schwarzheide and should also be in operation by 2022. BASF reports that it will then be the first supplier of cathode materials in the world with local production capacities in the three main markets of Asia, the US and Europe.
