The Guangzhou Automobile Group, GAC for short, is one of China's largest automobile manufacturers. German polymer manufacturer Covestro has recently announced that it is joining forces with the company's research and development department to design a lightweight seat back for the electrically powered ENO 146 concept car. The seat will be made from the composite material Maezio that Covestro has developed.
Maezio , which was introduced in 2018, is a continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composite (CFRTP). It consists of ultra-thin strips that are laminated together at specific angles to form lightweight, thin and rigid panels that look and feel like metal. The backrests made of Maezio for GAC are reported to be about 50% lighter than conventional metal constructions. When it comes to lightweight construction, automakers are primarily focusing on seats, as they are among the heaviest parts in the interior of the car.
